Gertrude Stein

Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) – amerykańska pisarka, poetka i feministka pochodzenia żydowskiego.

Surrealiści widzą świat tak samo jak wszyscy inni ludzie, udziwniają go, to prawda, na najrozmaitsze sposoby, ale w zasadzie widzą świat tak samo jak wszyscy. Proces udziwniania świata jest wprawdzie charakterystyką dwudziestowieczną, ale wizja świata surrealistów jest wizją świata wieku dziewiętnastego. Picasso widzi świat zupełnie inaczej niż oni, inną widzi rzeczywistość. Udziwnienie nie jest rzeczą trudną, ale stworzenie własnej wizji świata to sztuka niezmiernie rzadka.
- The surrealists still see things as everyone sees them, they complicate them in a different way but the vision is that of everyone else, in short the complication is the complication of the twentieth century but the vision is that of the nineteenth century. Twórca bynajmniej nie jest prekursorem swojego pokolenia, tylko pierwszym ze współczesnych, który rozumie, co się z jego pokoleniem dzieje. Autentyczny twórca to nie akademik, to nie student takiej czy innej szkoły, kierującej się znanymi i uznanymi kanonami, które jako znane i uznane de facto przestały dawno mieć jakiekolwiek znaczenie, autentyczny twórca jest, z natury rzeczy, wyrazicielem stylu życia swojej epoki, swojego pokolenia. Każde pokolenie żyje, oczywiście, w sposób dla siebie nowoczesny, ale nowoczesność ta ogranicza się wyłącznie do zagadnień życia codziennego. W dziedzinie sztuki, literatury, teatru, krótko mówiąc we wszystkich dziedzinach, które nie przyczyniają się bezpośrednio do zaspokajania pierwszych potrzeb materialnych, żyje się życiem pokolenia poprzedniego.
